Measure the Doors — All of Them
Let’s start by measuring the doors. You’ll need to measure the entryway to the home and any doors the sofa has to go through to reach its final destination.
Open the door all the way and measure the distance between the outer edge of the door and the inner edge of the frame. Check that against the width of your sofa. The door must be just a little larger than the sofa for it to fit.
Measure Hallways & Rooms
Measure spaces like hallways and make sure to take into account things that can’t be moved like baseboard heaters, fire extinguishers, light fixtures, and other built-in items. Don’t forget to take ceiling height measurements in case you need to turn the sofa to navigate.
Stairs & Elevators
If you live in a space with an elevator, make sure the sofa will fit. The height, width, and depth of the elevator should allow room for the sofa.
If there are stairs to navigate, measure the staircase at the narrowest point. Take into account the banister, light switches, or any other fixtures that can’t be moved. Don’t forget the ceiling height. If you need to navigate a narrow turn by tipping the sofa up or you must lift it over a stair rail, make sure there’s enough space.
