Extra suds and foam in your dishwasher leave you with an unwanted bubbly mess. Let’s check out some potential causes and figure out what to do about them.
Make sure you use the right amount and the right detergent
If you correctly use dishwashing detergent, there should be no excess foaming when you run your dishwasher. Make sure you use the recommended amount of detergent. More is not better.
All dish detergents are not created equal. Make sure you use a product specially designed for use in dishwashers and not just ordinary dishwashing liquid.
Don’t pre-wash dishes
When you pre-wash or pre-soak dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, they may be soap left behind that can foam up during the wash cycle.
Skip the pre-wash – it can actually confuse your dishwasher and cause your dishes to get less clean because the washer doesn’t recognize they are dirty.
If you must pre-wash, make sure to rinse them thoroughly.
What to do about suds
If you notice sudsing, stop the dishwasher and cancel the wash. Remove all of the dishes from the dishwasher.
Add about 4 ounces of cooking oil to the bottom of the dishwasher and run a quick wash cycle without detergent. The oil should help dissipate the foaming.
