How This Updated Kitchen Kept Its Vintage Charm

    by Appliance Center

The owners of this 1930 home wanted to update and modernize the kitchen space but also retain the home’s vintage charm.

Previous owners had already remodeled the kitchen, but the space still felt a bit cramped.

Owners Kristen and Justin already had some pretty clear ideas on what she wanted when she met with the Appliance Center Design team. Kristen says, “We knew there would be some focal points: the countertop, the brick, the coffee bar, and of course the stove hood - so we kind of worked around those items and built from there.”

Here’s an initial rendering of the design.

We went with the hexagon tiles with black grout because that's an updated play on the black and white kitchen,” Kristen says.

Kristen made one of her design dreams come true in the kitchen. “I just always wanted a standalone hood and pot filler because I feel like those are statement pieces in and of themselves.” The brick next to the hood is from the house’s original incinerator stack and the old door to the incinerator is original as well.

The Waypoint cabinets are light gray except for the island, which is white.

The coffee bar is antique, and Kristen plans to add an original glass cabinet door above it.

To open up the space, the contractor removed a pantry, closet, and the existing breakfast nook walls.

Appliance Center recommended ARS Construction and Kristen couldn’t have been happier. “They were an ABSOLUTE DREAM TEAM to work with. They were able to really make some last- minute accommodations that we wanted, keep the project on time and on budget, and seriously - we couldn't have had the space without them.”
