Help! My New Refrigerator is Noisy!

by Appliance Center

Picture this… You’ve finally replaced your 20-year-old refrigerator with a new energy-efficient model packed full of great features. But there’s a problem. It’s loud! Much louder than your old model, and it seems like the compressor runs all of the time.

Is it time to call a repair technician? Not necessarily. The fact is, compressors in new refrigerators do tend to run more. Why? Well, it’s all about energy efficiency. The rules regarding energy-efficient appliances are much stricter than they used to be.

These days, refrigerators have smaller compressors that run at lower speeds for longer periods of time to keep everything nice and cool. Compared to your old fridge, it may seem like it’s running all the time, but it’s actually working just the way it was designed to.

You can expect the compressor to run anywhere between 4 and 8 hours a day.

Also, expect the compressor to kick into action when the room is warm, you’ve just added new food, or after the door has been open for a while.

If you’re worried that there’s a problem with your new refrigerator, your first step is to contact the manufacturer since your new fridge is likely still under the manufacturer’s warranty. They’ll need to okay any type of service call. If the manufacturer’s warranty period has passed, but you purchased an extended warranty, contact the warranty company.
