When you’re shopping for a new refrigerator, you have a lot of decisions to make. There’s the size, color, and, of course, the price. Let’s not forget options like an ice maker or water dispenser. One of the most important decisions is freezer placement.
Top? Bottom? Side-by-side? You have lots of options. We have a few guidelines that can help you decide which works best for your home.
Freezer on Top
This is the most common freezer configuration. As a result, you have a wider selection of refrigerators to choose from. The freezer-on-top models are usually less expensive.
Top freezers have more room than bottom freezers in comparably-sized refrigerators. They are also the most energy efficient. The Department of Energy says top freezers use up to 25 percent less energy than side-by-side or bottom freezers, so they save money. Granted, not a lot of money, for the average homeowner it would add up to about $13 a year.
If you use your freezer frequently, it puts items at eye level for adults.
Freezer on Bottom
Bottom freezers were popular in the 1950s and 60s but fell out of favor for a few decades before making a big comeback in 21st Century kitchens.
The biggest advantage to a bottom freezer is actually the fridge. This style puts the refrigerator at eye level for a standing adult, making it easier to find what you’re looking for. Fruit and vegetables are much less likely to get lost than they are in a far-away crisper drawer.
The disadvantage is that the freezer can be more difficult to reach. Items are more likely to get lost at the bottom of the freezer. This configuration can make a freezer more accessible for those who are unable to stand but top shelves of the refrigerator are out of reach.
Kids can also help themselves to popsicles and other frozen treats, which can be a plus or a minus depending on how you look at it.
Side-by-Side
The obvious advantage of a side-by-side freezer is it’s possible to have the most frequently used items in both your refrigerator and freezer conveniently located at eye level.
Models offer handy adjustable shelves and door storage. It’s also possible to store much taller items than you can in other freezer. The downside is that it’s more difficult to store wider items.
Many side-by-side models feature built-in ice or water dispensers. These refrigerators also have a style advantage. To most people, they just appear sleeker and more modern.
Other Options
While a refrigerator with a built-in freezer is the most popular option, it’s certainly not the only choice.
You can easily augment the storage in a model with a small freezer by adding a separate freezer, either in the same kitchen or in a pantry, basement, or garage area. Chest freezers are an inexpensive and practical option.
Under the counter refrigerator and freezer drawers are a stylish and accessible option if you don’t require a lot of space.
