Agitators have been part of the design of top-loading washing machines for over 100 years. But do you need one? If you’re not familiar with the term, an agitator is the tall spindle in the middle of the washer’s drum that keeps the laundry moving through the water. The agitator rubs against laundry to help break up the stains, much in the way rubbing them against a washboard does when hand-washing clothes.
Impellers Save Space
Many modern top-loaders offer an alternative called an impeller. Impellers have a low-profile and take up a lot less space than an agitator. When an impeller rotates, it creates currents that move laundry through the water without actually touching it. Individual pieces of laundry rub against each other instead of the agitator.
Larger Loads
No agitator means there’s room for larger loads of laundry and bulkier items like comforters. However, impellers do spin faster, so if you overstuff, it’s easier for the washer to get thrown off-balance.
Energy Efficient
Impellers are often found in newer washing machines that use less water to get the job done. Many of these machines are also energy efficient and use less power. But that doesn’t mean a machine with an impeller always uses less power than one with an agitator. Modern agitator washers are very efficient. Check models to see if they are Energy Star Certified.
Best for Clothes
Impeller washers use less water which can make it harder to get really dirty clothes clean. Some models offer the option of a cycle that adds extra water for tough laundry jobs.
While an agitator can be a bit rougher on clothes, it does help break up tough stains. Fortunately, the agitators in newer washers are gentler than ever.
Both types of washers are more than capable of handling the laundry needs of the average household.
