There are some folks out there who completely redecorate every year or two but most of us expect to get years of use out of a major purchase like a sofa. So, when is it time to buy a new one? Here are some signs it’s time to upgrade.
Creaking
Does your sofa groan when you sit on it? Creaking, popping, cracking and other noises are signs of structural damage. Maybe there’s that telltale ‘boing’ of a metal spring in distress.
If the couch is a valuable antique, repairing it might be worth the cost. In most cases, it’s probably less expensive to replace than repair.
Sagging
Sagging seat cushions are another sign your sofa has outlived its usefulness. When you lean back, do the cushions support you? Are back cushions squashed down? If your cushions unzip, it may be possible to replace foam or batting.
Stained or Worn Upholstery
Most sofas get lots of daily use and they tend to show it. A few years of spilled drinks, rowdy kids, and pet traffic often leave upholstery in pretty bad shape.
Your best bet is to spot clean as soon as you see a stain. Regular upholstery cleaning can help keep your sofa looking its best. While you could hire a cleaning service or rent a machine, purchasing a small upholstery cleaner might be worth the expensive if you have multiple upholstered pieces.
Sunlight will fade the color of upholstery over time. It is possible to patch holes, tears, and worn spots but those repairs are often visible.
Smell
Doing your best to keep your sofa clean will help fight odor. But pet accidents, spilled food, and sweaty humans can start to give your couch a certain aroma over time.
There are upholstery deodorizers you can try but they can only do so much. If cleaning and a good blast of odor remover don’t help the problems, you could try replacing the foam and batting inside the cushions. But there are no guarantees.
It Just Doesn’t Fit
Things change. After a few years of good service, your sofa just may not fit your room, your life, or your taste.
If you’ve moved or acquired other pieces of furniture, your sofa could be too large or too small for your space. Maybe you’ve added more members to your family and just need more seating.
If you have frequent overnight visitors, the convenience of a sleeper sofa may be just the thing you need.
Perhaps the kids have grown up and moved out and it’s time for you to put together the stylish living room of your dreams. You could give that old sofa to one of those kids for their first apartment.
